‘Embarrassing’: Meghan Markle’s Netflix show faces brutal backlash

Meghan Markle’s latest Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, has drawn sharp criticism, with a body language expert branding it a “dystopian nightmare for feminists” and suggesting it should be renamed Love Me, Meghan.

The series, which premiered in the UK on Tuesday, features the Duchess of Sussex sharing hosting tips while engaging in activities such as making bath salts, candles, and party decorations. However, the show’s content and tone have been met with scepticism from critics, who argue it presents an outdated and overly simplistic perspective.

Body language expert Judi James, in remarks carried by The Express, described Markle’s performance as excessively focused on charm and nostalgia, reinforcing traditional stereotypes. “Meghan implies a childlike view of the world,” James said, referring to her habit of making up rhymes and displaying excitement over seemingly trivial matters.

“She dances about, squeals, and acts excited about everything,” James observed, adding that the overarching theme of the show appears to centre on Meghan’s own image. “The overriding visual narrative looks set on showcasing the adorability and undiluted sweetness of the Duchess of Sussex.”

The expert went on to criticise the series for what she described as its regressive depiction of women. “Meghan’s unreality show is also a dystopian nightmare for feminists,” she remarked. “It offers a glimpse of how women might have looked had we never got the vote, consigned to a Jane Austen world of sprigged cotton and flower arranging, where survival meant marrying rich and entertaining the locals.”

The criticism comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Markle’s media projects, with many questioning the direction of her brand following her and Prince Harry’s multi-million dollar deal with Netflix. While some supporters have praised the Duchess’s latest endeavour as an effort to share positivity, others remain unconvinced about its broader cultural relevance.

Netflix has not yet responded to the criticism surrounding the show.
