Instagram will no longer allow adults to contact young teens

Instagram is bringing a new policy that will limit interactions between teenagers and adults so that young users can safely spend their time on Instagram. Now those adults will banned from messaging young girls who do not follow them via the app’s new feature “safety prompts” that will be displayed to teens when they reply to adults who have been “exhibiting potentially suspicious behavior.”

Safety prompts will offer teenage users the choice to report or block adults who are trying to contact them. The prompts will be reminder for young users not to be forced to respond to messages and to “be careful sharing photos, videos, or information with someone you don’t know.”

Notifications will emerge when Instagram’s moderation systems find any doubtful conduct from adult users. The company is not revealing detail on how these methods work but says such doubtful behavior could consist of sending “a large amount of friend or message requests to people under 18.” The Facebook-owned Instagram stated that this feature will be accessible in some countries in a few days (it did not specify when) and available internationally “soon.”
