The PML-N has rejecteed a letter by the National Command and Operation Centre suggesting to postpone Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections for two months because of the COVID-19.

“What has NCOC got to do with [the] elections?” previous prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi questioned in a during a press conference today.

He named NCOC’s suggestion  a scheme for rigging. “The same thing that happened in Gilgit-Baltistan is being repeated in Azad Kashmir,” he said.

Abbasi asked whether NCOC proposing about a postponement in elections is constitutional. “Haven’t elections been held in other parts of the country?” he asked.

He claimed that this is an effort to “steal” the elections in AJK and made connections to former elections in Pakistan.

Let the elections conduct as people want to, Abbasi said, further mentioning that the PML-N wants the elections in AJK to be as per schedule. “We reject the NCOC letter. It should be withdrawn,” he said.

A day before this, NCOC had recommended delaying the AJK elections for two months, stating tha the procedure will give base to an upsurge in the number of coronavirus cases.

The NCOC penned a letter to the chief election commissioner of AJK, mentioning that as a result of the increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the country, the elections should be postponed.
