Due to the prevailing smog, the Punjab government has officially declared three weekly holidays for public and private educational institutions in Lahore. The three weekly holidays will remain in effect until further notice.

The School Education Department (SED) has announced that all public and private schools in Lahore will be closed on Fridays and Saturdays. The third holiday will be the official Sunday holiday.

The change occurs a day after the Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered the Punjab government to notify all educational institutions that they will be closed three days a week due to the crippling smog that has engulfed the province.

The LHC Judge, Justice Shahid Kareem, also expressed grave displeasure over the provincial government’s efforts to reduce smog during a hearing of the case regarding the persistent smog in Punjab, particularly Lahore, and its catastrophic effects on the citizens.

Punjab’s Chief Minister (CM), Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, also declared an environmental emergency in the region. The announcement comes as the province’s smog situation worsens.

Smog-producing activities in the province, such as stubble burning, brick kilns, and smoke-emitting vehicles, must be under control, according to Punjab’s chief minister. He directed the anti-smog squad to carry out these instructions strictly.
