Dr. Usman Anwar, the Punjab Police’s Inspector General (IG), announced the creation of “Protection Centers” in each district of the province to offer members of the transgender community both legal and social protection.

Ahsan Younis, the deputy IG for information technology (IT), will oversee the initiative and endeavor to ensure that the centers are operational all across the province.

A debate on “Protection of Transgender Community’s Rights” was held on Monday at the Central Police Office, where IG Punjab shared his opinions throughout the discussion.

Organizations striving to uphold the rights of the transgender community, members of civil society, and transgender people themselves offered their thoughts during the session.

According to the IG, measures will be made to stop the economic abuse of transgender people, and the department would provide transgender people preference for jobs under a special quota.

The protection centers, he continued, will be activated in already existing offices without the need for extra resources.

The IG further stated that the transgender community members would receive thorough understanding and guidance on their issues from the protection centers.

He stressed that the protection centers will preserve the dignity of transgender people and enhance communication with other private organizations like TEVTA and the Labor Department, allowing them to flourish as skilled and useful members of society.

The IG emphasized the necessity for special consideration and treatment for members of the transgender community in order to alleviate the feeling of deprivation and dread they frequently feel.
