The provincial government is moving to introduce legislation that will require thalassemia testing for all newborns, according to Dr. Javed Akram, the interim Punjab Health Minister, who made the announcement on Monday.

Dr. Akram revealed that Fatima Jinnah Medical University is working on the establishment of a Well Woman Clinic during his address as a special guest at the ceremony for the Best Graduate Award held at FJMU.

To conduct the necessary tests, FJMU will also have access to the General Hospital’s Next Generation Sequencing facility.

The objective of getting Fatima Jinnah Medical University to the top of the world rankings was emphasized by Dr. Akram. He also drew attention to the worrying statistic that only 1% of Pakistan’s land is registered in the names of women, despite the fact that women make up roughly 52% of the country’s population.

The government’s dedication to promoting the health and well-being of its citizens is evidenced by the proposed legislation to require thalassemia testing for newborns.

This step in legislating newborn thalassemia testing truly indicates government dedication towards improving the well-being of citizens. By enacting such a law, it will be possible to spot cases of thalassemia early on and ensure that the right medical care is provided, ultimately improving the health of those who are affected.

Additionally, the opening of a Well Woman Clinic at FJMU will offer complete medical services that are especially suited for women, addressing their particular needs and enhancing their general well-being. Advanced genetic testing will be possible thanks to the partnership with the General Hospital’s Next Generation Sequencing facility, which will support precise diagnoses and efficient treatment strategies.
