Sushant Singh Rajput’s sudden demise has given rise to a nepotism debate in Bollywood. There is a spark of anger among the audience who wants to know the reason as to why a young and talented actor would choose to take his own life. Many fingers points towards the film industry and the concept of nepotism.
Sushant was an engineering student who grew up in the northern state of Bihar, was the classic outsider who managed to force open the doors of Bollywood to craft a brief but successful acting career. Replying to an Instagram post last year, he asked his fans to watch his films because he needed their help to “survive in Bollywood.”
Under the theory of nepotism many names came under the radar including Karan Johar and Mahesh Bhatt, two of the very prominent names in the Bollywood industry. Karan Johar is known for introducing star kids in the B-town and currently he is receiving major backlash due to this. His casting choices have created the impression that he certainly is the most distinguished of the upholders of this strange diabolical phenomenon of filmi-nepotism.
Actress Kangana Ranaut has revealed that Sushant Singh Rajput was sidelined by major production houses and filmmaker Karan Johar was the reason behind it. She further said that Karan Johar had called late actor Sushant Singh Rajput a ‘flop’ hero after his film Drive had no takers in June 2019.
Sonu Sood has also advised the outsiders who don’t belong to the Bollywood industry regarding nepotism after Sushant’s death. In an interview with India Today, Sonu said, ”So the only thing I can tell outsiders coming into this industry is that come only if you have nerves of steel and don’t expect miracles to happen. Just because you look a certain way or have a good physique doesn’t mean somebody from a production house will spot you and cast you in their next film.”
“A star kid, in that aspect, will obviously have easy access. The father will just pick up the phone and speak to the director or the producer of the film and they will get a break. Tomorrow if my kids want to be in this industry, perhaps it will be easy for them.” he added.
Film critic Anupama Chopra said she has decided not to review Rajput’s last film.
“In such a vitiated atmosphere, it’s impossible for me to see Dil Bechara in isolation and gauge it on its own merits,” she wrote in the Film Companion, an online movie magazine.
