Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan’s first female prime minister, was revealed as a wax figure on Sunday at the Madame Tussauds Museum in Dubai. The statue is displayed in the museum next to wax replicas of other world leaders.
In Pakistan, Benazir served as prime minister twice. In December 2007, just weeks before a general election, she was shot and killed after attending a political rally. She was notable for being the first woman to head a country with a majority of Muslims.
Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Benazir’s son and the Pakistani Foreign Minister at the time, was also present at the revealing ceremony. He was present in UAE on account of an official visit. During his speech at the occasion, he thanked Madame Tussauds for hosting him.
Bilawal had previously seen a different wax replica of his deceased mother at Londons’s Madame Tussaud. He also reflected on his family’s strong ties with the country at the unveiling ceremony while mentioning their ten-year stay in exile in Dubai.
Bilawal claims that Benazir’s statue honours his mother’s contributions as a supporter of freedom, democracy, and the rights of women in Pakistan and around the world.
He expressed his appreciation to the Madame Tussauds staff for their work in creating this memorial for his mother as the ceremony came to a close.
