Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, the interim prime minister, presided over an emergency meeting on Sunday that ended with a commitment to offer as much immediate and long-term relief as possible as nationwide demonstrations against electricity prices entered their third day.
The interim prime minister stated in a post on X that the Power Division and the Finance Division have been instructed to develop a plan to provide relief to the general public.
The acting prime minister claimed that he has also requested a thorough report on the free electricity given to government workers. He further stated that immediate action would be taken to cut back on the use of electricity in government buildings.
According to a different in-depth press release from the government, the interim prime minister has been asked to develop a concrete plan to lower electricity prices for the general public within the next 48 hours.
According to the press release, Kakar stated that the government would take steps to relieve the public’s suffering without adding to the burden on the national budget.
The implementation of energy-saving measures and the problem of inflated bills for the month of July would be discussed at a meeting between the premier and the chief ministers of the various provinces.
In addition, the prime minister gave distribution companies orders to present a road map against electricity theft as well as a strategy for short-, medium-, and long-term power sector reforms.
