The popular messaging service WhatsApp, which falls under the Meta brand, is still dedicated to enhancing user privacy.
The most recent update (version 2.23.18.15), which is right now accessible through the Google Play Beta Programme, emphasises the app’s ongoing efforts to protect user data and give privacy a high priority.
In order to increase call privacy, WhatsApp previously introduced the “silence unknown callers” feature, according to WABetaInfo. This feature allowed users to mute calls from unknown contacts. For added security, the app will soon even allow you to hide your IP address when making calls.
The upcoming privacy relay feature for calls from WhatsApp will have a mechanism that will reroute calls through the business’s servers. By hiding the user’s IP address, you make it more difficult for people to find or recognise you. WhatsApp cautions users, however, that making use of this feature will lower call quality because calls must be rerouted, as seen in the screenshot above.
This feature’s main objective is to provide secure calls that effectively block location tracking using call-related data. However, this new feature presents the problem of striking the ideal balance between call quality and privacy.
The privacy relay feature is currently being tested by a small group of beta users. In the near future, more people will be included in its testing, with the goal of eventually releasing a stable version.
