Saudi Arabia has announced a dress code for Muslim women going on the Umrah pilgrimage to Makkah’s Grand Mosque.

The country’s Ministry of Hajj and Umrah posted the guidelines on X (formerly Twitter), emphasising comfort and modesty in accordance with Islamic teachings.

The Ministry states that women can wear whatever they want during the Umrah as long as the attire:

snugly fitting.
without any ornamentation.
Embrace the whole body.
The kingdom is getting ready for roughly 10 million foreign Muslims to visit the Grand Mosque as the Umrah season picks up speed.

This comes after the Hajj season, which attracted nearly 1.8 million pilgrims—the biggest crowd in the three years since the pandemic started.

Many Muslims will travel for Umrah instead of performing Hajj if they are unable to do so for financial or physical reasons. Saudi Arabia recently introduced a number of conveniences to make this journey easier for visitors from around the world.

Muslims can now make an e-appointment to perform Umrah with a variety of visa types, such as personal, visitation, and tourist visas.

The Umrah visa’s validity has also been increased from 30 to 90 days. Pilgrims can travel to and from the country by land, air, or sea. Additionally, female pilgrims are no longer required to travel with a male guardian.

Regardless of their employment status, expats living in GCC nations can obtain a tourist visa that will allow them to perform Umrah.
