On Friday morning, Sidra Afzal (22), a disturbed woman, jumped from the second floor of Lahore General Hospital (LGH) in a terrible event. This was just a few days after the birth of her third daughter.

Initial inquiries into the occurrence lead to the conclusion that Sidra went to such considerable lengths to avoid the expected “comments or taunts” from her relatives as a result of not having a male. When the tragedy happened, she was receiving care in the hospital’s labour room when she fell out of a window and suffered grave wounds. Sidra was promptly sent in critical condition to the Punjab Institute of Neuro Sciences (PINS).

The third of Sidra’s daughters was delivered by C-section on September 18 at a private hospital in Kasur, according to LGH officials. She was taken to LGH as her health deteriorated. Sidra underwent an operation to remove about two litres of fluid and blood from her belly, according to medical superintendent Prof. Nurdat Sohail. She was eventually transferred to the intensive care unit where two female attendants were permitted to take care of her due to her delicate medical condition.

A five-person team headed by Dr. Khizar Hayyat Gondal, professor of urology, has been constituted by Prof. Al-Fareed Zafar, principal of the Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI), to look into the situation. Additionally, police are being called in to look into this unfortunate situation further.
