KARACHI: A spokeswoman for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) told ARY News on Friday that the national carrier had canceled nearly 500 flights in the last 11 days owing to fuel shortages, putting the airline in danger of shutting down.
The national flag carrier, Pakistan State Oil (PSO), has suspended gasoline supplies owing to unpaid dues, putting it in possibly the biggest crisis in its history.
Due to the change, the airline has had to cancel 537 flights as of October 13.
Up to 49 domestic and international flights from Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta, Multan, Peshawar, and other cities were canceled yesterday, according to reports, as a result of Pakistan State Oil (PSO) reducing its fuel supply to the PIA.
The flights that were scheduled to depart from Karachi to Islamabad (PK 300, PK 301, PK 368, and PK 369) and from Karachi to Turbat (PK 501 and PK 502) were canceled.
Additionally, prior to the privatization, Amir Hayat, the CEO of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), sent a “motivation letter” to the staff.
In the midst of the financial crisis, the suspension of airline operations, and the continuing privatization process, PIA CEO Amir Hayat addressed an open letter to inspire staff members.
Prior to the airline’s privatization, Hayat requested all staff members to have a laser-like concentration on guaranteeing organizational compliance through close-knit collaboration.
