Star all-around player Shakib Al Hasan has entered politics and will run for a parliamentary seat after receiving the endorsement of the Awami League.

Details indicate that Shakib Al Hasan received nomination paperwork from the Awami League on Saturday in order to compete in the 2024 elections. This was formally acknowledged by the party’s joint secretary general, Bahauddin Nasim.

The elections are scheduled for January 7, and Shakib is expected to run from his hometown district, Magura-1.

The cricket all-rounder was greeted warmly by Bahauddin Nasim, who also noted how well-liked and famous he was, especially among the nation’s youth.

For example, Mashrafe Mortaza, a former captain of Bangladesh, entered politics and was elected to the previous parliament, serving as a member of parliament for Narail.

This year, Mashrafe has been nominated once more, underscoring his ongoing involvement in local community activities. Shakib hasn’t actively engaged in civic life outside of cricket, though.

Nazmul Hassan, the president of the BCB and an MP since 2009, was able to obtain a second nomination from his Kishoreganj constituency. Shafiul Alam Chowdhury, the director of BCB, was also nominated for the Moulvibazar seat.

In spite of his best efforts, incumbent Member of Parliament Naimur Rahman, a former captain of Bangladesh, was unable to secure the Manikganj seat for the next elections. In terms of cricket, Shakib remains the leader of the Twenty20 internationals despite having declared his intention to resign as the ODI captain before the World Cup.
