Punjab Sets New Fees for Driver’s Licences

Drivers, be ready! The government has increased the cost of obtaining a driver’s licence by a considerable amount.

Permits for learners cost Rs 500 currently, a huge increase from Rs 60. Some people may be deterred from pursuing their aspirations of becoming drivers by this staggering 733% rise.

An annual motorbike licence now costs Rs 980 instead of Rs 580. The yearly cost for cars and Jeeps is also higher, rising from Rs 1,180 to Rs 2,280. Be ready to pay Rs 2,480 per year, whether you operate a heavy-duty vehicle (HTV) or a light-duty vehicle (LTV).

At Rs6,030, the foreign licence charge has quadrupled from Rs1,830. Those who wish to have valid licences overseas may find their trip plans disrupted by this abrupt spike.

Although the government hasn’t formally stated its reasons for the significant hikes, some speculate that tougher licencing requirements may have been implemented to make roads safer as well as to raise revenue.
