WhatsApp is about to release a feature that may confuse consumers when it comes to wireless file sharing. The messaging behemoth has been assiduously releasing new features, but this one in particular has the potential to completely change how we exchange files with those nearby.
The next functionality of WhatsApp for Android has been teased in the beta version (2.24.2.20). The file-sharing mechanism functions on machines that are physically close to one another, according to WABetaInfo’s findings. To begin file sharing, both users must have the People Nearby panel active. Notably, devices won’t be visible to one another if users don’t know one another’s phone numbers, providing a certain level of privacy.
The interactive aspect of exchanging files is what distinguishes this service. One of the two users who wants to share files must shake their smartphone vigorously and activate the People Nearby screen in order to start a sharing request. The nostalgic gesture may bring back memories for anyone who used the well-known Bump file-sharing iPhone app in 2011.
The claimed capability for file sizes up to 2GB is the icing on the cake. Even so, WhatsApp is still testing this functionality right now. Later in the year, it may be made available to consumers, offering a fresh approach to easily sharing big files.
No Connection, No Numbers
It’s important to remember, too, that this wireless file-sharing technique seems to be designed specifically for people transferring data between Android and iPhone devices. Recently, Quick Share and Nearby Share in Android combined to simplify the procedure for consumers. Likewise, iOS users have long benefited from AirDrop’s effectiveness in transferring files.
Although WhatsApp is commended for its creativity, it is unclear if this function will be widely used. The native file-sharing features on each device, which are renowned for being simple to use and effective, may cause users to remain with them.
Novelty confronts realism.
WhatsApp’s foray into wireless file sharing adds an interesting new dimension to the ever-evolving world of messaging apps. Time will tell if it turns out to be a game-changer or just an interesting addition. In the meantime, let’s prepare for a time when we may be able to share data with those nearby with only a simple shake of the hand.
