On Thursday, a fire broke out in the South African city of Johannesburg, killing at least 74 people.
A five-story, dilapidated building in Johannesburg that housed squatters and the homeless was destroyed by fire during the night.
Witnesses claimed that during the frantic rush to escape, some people threw babies out of third-story windows to those waiting below.
According to city and medical officials, at least 12 of those killed were children, the youngest being 1 year old. At a news conference, officials reported that an unknown number of people were still missing and that many of the bodies that had been found had been severely burned.
Six of the injured, who totaled over 50, were hospitalised with serious injuries. More than 12 hours after the blaze started at around 1 a.m., emergency services officials had previously issued a warning that the death toll might increase as they continued to search the scene.
