Reputable Apple analyst Mark Gurman recently included fascinating details about Apple’s pursuit of larger iPads in his “Power On” newsletter.
Gurman claims that since 2021, Apple has been considering making even larger iPads, with a massive 14-inch model being considered for a 2023 release. But it appears that for the time being, this lofty dream has been put on hold.
The transition to OLED displays in the iPad lineup was a significant obstacle on the path to larger iPads. The cost of manufacturing larger tablet screens could significantly increase as a result of this transition.
As previously reported, the first iPad Pro models, scheduled to debut in the first half of 2024, are anticipated to have a maximum display size of 13 inches.
Gurman was the first to propose that Apple might introduce iPads with larger screens, blurring the distinction between a tablet and a laptop.
Several suppliers, including BOE and LG, were reportedly getting ready to supply Apple with OLED displays around 15 inches in size, ideal for upcoming iPad models, according to reports that surfaced in January 2022.
Then, the renowned leaker “Majin Bu” made a shocking revelation, claiming that Apple was actively developing a 14.1-inch iPad with an M2 chip.
Ross Young, an analyst for the display industry, gave this rumour credibility. Young originally predicted a mini-LED display, but later changed his mind and claimed Apple had chosen an LCD display akin to the iPad mini and iPad Air instead.
In a shocking turn of events, Wayne Ma of The Information reported in October 2022 that Apple was diligently working on a 16-inch iPad, possibly with a release date in the fourth quarter of 2023 in mind.
With a canvas almost as big as a 16-inch MacBook Pro, this potential device would give users a significantly larger workspace. But Young revealed in December that Apple had abandoned its plans for the 14.1-inch iPad.
Apple continues to be interested in larger iPads despite the erratic rumours. The 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models, which are still smaller than the smallest MacBooks, are the largest iPads currently on the market as of 2018.
It won’t be long before Apple releases a significantly larger iPad model, with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro rumoured to grow to 13 inches.
The prospect of a 16-inch iPad model is still intriguing even though the project for a 14.1-inch model may be put on hold. However, the project has come to a halt, leaving fans anxiously awaiting news about Apple’s pursuit of a larger iPad.
