Social media has reacted in anger after the news came out that Israeli actress Gal Gadot has been casted as Cleopatra in the upcoming biopic Cleopatra; the queen of Nile.
The casting of wonder woman lead actress as Cleopatra has raised many questions among the netizens as to why can’t Hollywood find an Egyptian actress to play the role of a major Egyptian character.
This casting is being named as “Hollywood whitewashing” by fans as they want an actress of color to play the role of an Egyptian queen.
Author Morgan Jerkins stated his views on Gadot being casted: “I’m sure Gal Gadot is going to do a wonderful job as Cleopatra. However, for me personally, I would love a Cleopatra who’s darker than a brown paper bag, because that seems a bit more historically accurate.”
Some even had problem with her serving as an Israeli soldier in 2006 when Israel bombed Southern Lebanon.
One fan wrote: “I’m not sure if I’m more offended because she’s a colonizer-warmonger or just a terrible actor”
Then again in 2014, during Israel’s 52 day war on Gaza strip where 3000 Palestinian civilians were killed, Gadot was found to be sending prayers to the Israeli soldiers. She had tweeted: “I am sending my love and prayers to my fellow Israeli citizens,” Gadot wrote in a Facebook post.
“Especially to all the boys and girls who are risking their lives protecting my country against the horrific acts conducted by Hamas, who are hiding like cowards behind women and children … We shall overcome!!! Shabbat Shalom!
Do you think Gal Gadot should be casted as the Egyptian queen Cleopatra?
