On Tuesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished Shehbaz Sharif, the new prime minister of Pakistan, a happy birthday with other international leaders.
“Congratulations to Shehbaz Sharif on being sworn in as the Prime Minister of Pakistan,” the Indian leader said on social media.
Despite the escalating hostilities between the two bitter adversaries, Modi offered congratulations.
The main causes of the decades-long hostilities between Islamabad and New Delhi have been territorial disputes and Indian-occupied Kashmir.
Even more hostilities result from these tensions, including border crossings, military engagements, and strained diplomatic ties between nuclear-armed states.
2019 saw Islamabad reduce diplomatic ties with the Modi administration following New Delhi’s revocation of Kashmir’s special status.
During his last tenure, Prime Minister Sharif stated that he was eager to have talks with India, but only if Kashmir’s status was restored.
