The Indian government has appointed Jaya Verma Sinha as the first female CEO and Chairperson of the Railway Board, the highest decision-making body in charge of managing the country’s railway network, in a historic appointment.
This historic announcement, which was made on Thursday, represents a crucial turning point in Indian railway history. This crucial company will be led by Jaya Verma Sinha, who currently holds the position of Member (Operations and Business Development) on the Railway Board. Her appointment is a reward for her outstanding contributions to the railway industry.
The recent Member (Operations and Business Development) position Jaya Verma Sinha held, in which she played a critical role in explaining the complex signalling system in the wake of the tragic Balasore accident that claimed the lives of nearly 300 people, served as a testament to her prominence in the railway industry.
The appointment of Jaya Verma Sinha to the prestigious position was formally announced by the order from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). She holds an honourable position within the Indian Railway Management Services (IRMS).
Notably, Sinha is scheduled to retire on October 1; however, as she assumes her new duties, her position will be extended. She will succeed Anil Kumar Lahoti, who formerly held the position, in her new position.
When Jaya Verma Sinha joined the Indian Railway Traffic Service in 1988, her career in the Indian railway industry officially began. She has held positions of responsibility throughout the years with the Northern Railway, Southeastern Railway, and Eastern Railway.
Sinha also has experience outside of India; for an impressive four years, she served as the Railway Advisor at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
She was crucial in the launch of the Maitree Express, an important railway link between Kolkata and Dhaka, during her time in Bangladesh.
Among Sinha’s professional accomplishments is her position as Divisional Railway Manager for the Sealdah Division of the Eastern Railway. Her historic selection as the first female CEO and Chairperson of the Railway Board was undoubtedly made possible by her extensive experience and knowledge in the railway industry.
