The Lahore High Court has released a comprehensive notice regarding conservation of water and environment pollution and stated that the government should take measures against industries creating pollution.
In Its 53-page verdict on a public interest petition started by advocate Sheraz Zaka , Justice Shahid Karim ruled that the water commission shall take measures against industries accountable for polluting the environment.
He noticed that bringing down environmental pollution is the first responsibility of the country; the government has not done much to eradicate pollution that is a failure of the government. The court said the government has not taken proper steps for the safety of water policy, further mentioning that orders have been given out for non-effective implementation of the protection of the water policy.
As per the decision, ground water was found to be polluted with arsenic, iron and fluoride. Environmental pollution is becoming a cause of 1.5 million deaths yearly, quoting a WHO report in the High Court decision that burning oil and coal caused 7 million deaths previous year.
The court said the water commission shall take measure against the sugar industry for not establishing water treatment plants and appoint environmental examiners in every district to take action against those factories generating smog.
