In light of the fuel cost adjustment for February 2024, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) authorized an increase in power tariffs of Rs 5 per unit on Thursday.

The regulatory body has concluded its hearing on the petition for an increase in the electricity rate, which would further burden the already struggling population due to inflation.

One NEPRA member mentioned during the hearing that because there is less demand for power, customers are paying more. He said that the cost of energy increased when costly LNG was used in place of local coal.

Rafiq Sheikh, a member of NEPRA, stated that high fuel costs for power plants impact customers in addition to resulting in foreign exchange losses.

According to a member from Balochistan, the public would have to pay Rs 7.63 for each unit in March.

Authorities from the Power Division informed Nepra that the government wants to recoup Rs 1.2 trillion from power users. They said that between September 7 and March 25, electricity theft of Rs1.16 billion was reduced.
