Following Malala Yousafzai’s request, the Punjab government has decided to prohibit physical punishment in educational institutions.

The decision was made by Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Pervaiz Elahi during a meeting with Pakistan’s youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner.

In order to prevent corporal punishment in the province’s schools and seminaries, he made the decision to submit a bill to the provincial assembly.

Elahi and Malala discussed a number of plans and education initiatives in Pakistan that the Malala Fund would fund during their meeting. They also discussed how to improve education in the province, particularly for girls.

Malala praised CM Elahi for reforming the education system and lauded his initiatives in the province that help people learn.

Elahi stated at the event that punishing students in schools and seminaries is unacceptable and that he would pass legislation to stop it.
