Orders from the Election Commission to Halt Development Projects

Officials in interim governments and the public have received instructions from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The commission’s actions, which were made public on August 15th, cover many facets of governance in an effort to level the playing field for all candidates.

Governments at all levels, including local, provincial, and federal, have been told to stop hiring, moving, and posting public officials. Except for ongoing projects that were already approved prior to the notification, the execution and announcement of development schemes have been prohibited.

Within three days of taking office, interim prime ministers, ministers, and other members of interim governments are required to submit statements of their personal assets and debts, as well as those of their spouses and dependent children.

ECP has also demanded the removal of leaders of institutions who were appointed on the basis of politics, the vacationing of former officials in government housing, and the removal of official vehicles. The dignitaries will only be provided with security and protocol in accordance with their rights, and additional security deployment will be discontinued.

The interim governments are required to perform crucial daily tasks, but they are not allowed to interfere with the elections. However, under certain legislative acts, they are permitted to decide on projects that have already been chosen with notification to the commission.
