A significant step forward in bilateral commercial relations was taken when Pakistan approved Brazil’s sale of live cattle to the South Asian nation.
The biggest nation in South and Latin America, Brazil, verified the fact in a statement from its ministry of agriculture.
Brazil’s live cattle exports increased by 154 percent in 2023 to a total value of around $489 million, compared to 2022.
According to official figures, Pakistan imported fibres and textiles worth $298 million from Brazil last year.
The proposed changes to the relevant sections of Import Policy Order 2022 pertaining to the import of live cattle were approved by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) in April 2023.
The Ministry of Commerce has suggested the changes in accordance with the updated rules and regulations on animal (cattle) commerce published by the World Organisation of Animal Health (WOAH).
Due to hygiene concerns, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) banned the import of fresh beef from Pakistan via the maritime route in September 2023.
The move was initiated when cargo was inspected by UAE officials upon arrival in the Gulf country, and they discovered fungus on the meat.
