As the head of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif resigned on Monday, according to sources who spoke to Geo News.
The announcement was made by PML-N Punjab chapter President Rana Sanaullah, who stated that Nawaz Sharif, the former prime minister, will assume leadership of the party.
In the meantime, the PML-N central committee has scheduled a meeting for May 18 at 11:30 a.m. in Lahore.
In accordance with Party Constitution Section 15, this meeting has been convened. The party’s central committee received notifications about the meeting from PML-N Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal.
In 2017, Nawaz resigned as prime leader of the nation when the Supreme Court permanently barred him from public office for failing to disclose a payable income.
In February 2018, after Nawaz’s trial in the Panama Papers case, the Supreme Court removed him from his position as PML-N president.
The highest court ruled in its decision that an individual barred by Articles 62 and 63 is unable to hold the position of leader of a political party. But in October of last year, the seasoned politician returned home from his self-imposed four-year exile in London.
On January 8, 2024, the Supreme Court lifted lifelong restrictions on individuals with criminal records from running for office, allowing Nawaz to seek reelection four times.
With its stalwarts present, the PML-N convened a meeting on May 7 under the supremo’s chair to make crucial decisions on the party’s next general council meeting, which is set for May 11, 2024.
According to reports, the conference resolved to hold new elections for the party’s president and secretary general, with Nawaz being nominated as the new leader and Khawaja Saad Rafique as the chosen candidate. The general council meeting will see the presentation of the resolution designating Nawaz as president.
Nawaz will become the party president after a resolution to that effect was overwhelmingly approved by PML-N Punjab. According to party insiders, the decision has been made to divide up posts related to governance and organisation in order to reorganise the party and make it more visible and active in the public sphere.
