The decision was made by President Asif Ali Zardari to forgo receiving a government salary because of the nation’s current economic difficulties.
The President’s Secretariat Press Wing made his choice public in a statement on Tuesday.
He made this choice in an effort to promote responsible financial management throughout the nation. The statement stated that the president deemed it imperative to save the public coffers and opted to forego his income.
The Pakistani president’s account on X, previously Twitter, posted a message outlining his plans to make the important move.
“The purpose of President Asif Zardari’s decision is to encourage prudent financial management in the country,” said the article.
Furthermore, it stated that the president has recommended against taxing the federal coffers and instead favors not accepting a salary.
President Zardari took the oath of office as head of state the day after winning a wide victory on March 9 to become the nation’s 14th president.
Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad hosted the swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected president, during which Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa delivered the oath.
Zardari, the joint candidate of the ruling coalition, defeated Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the nominee of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), who was endorsed by the PTI, by a significant margin to win the presidency for the second time.
Zardari has won the presidency twice already. Prior to this, from 2008 to 2013, he was Pakistan’s eleventh president. Since August 2018, he has been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan.
Zardari was raised and schooled in Karachi after being born in 1955. He was married to Benazir Bhutto, the daughter of Pakistan’s former prime leader Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was murdered in December 2007.
Zardari will take over for Dr. Arif Alvi, who concluded his five-year tenure in September 2023 but remained in office for an additional five months.
