Sharing data with Facebook will now be necessary to use Whatsapp

Now you will have to share your data with Facebook in order to keep using Whatsapp application.

Whatsapp has been warning the Indian users about this new update regarding their terms of services and privacy policy. This update will reportedly be effective from February. This particular update in the privacy policy lead to the “Information You Provide” section with details related to what data Whatsapp users provide to Facebook and how Facebook shares this provided data with other company products and third parties.

The update also explains how company will “automatically collect” data from Whatsapp users. Some of the info that the company will be collecting might include:

  • the hardware model of your phone
  • operating system information
  • battery level
  • signal strength
  • app version
  • browser information
  • mobile network
  • Connection information (including phone number, mobile operator or ISP)
  • language and time zone
  • IP address
  • device operations information, and identifiers.

The official statement read: “Even if you do not use our location-related features, we use IP addresses and other information like phone number area codes to estimate your general location (e.g., city and country).”

According to the info given out by company, this is only some amount of data that will be collected by Facebook.
