The Punjab Environment Protection Department released information indicating that Lahore’s air quality remained highly harmful even after it was reported at 498. With an air quality index score of 279, Delhi, the capital of India, is now the second most polluted city in the world.
Due to the haze, people in Lahore are complaining of sore throats and irritated eyes.
The five types of pollution that are used to compute the AQI are particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and ground-level ozone.
An AQI grade of 150–200 is deemed unhealthy, 201–300 is more detrimental, and 300 and above is classified as severely hazardous.
Experts say that there used to be a wintertime spike in air pollution. Air pollution is increased by variations in wind direction, speed, and falling minimum temperature.
Wintertime air density is higher than summertime air density, which leads to the downward movement of airborne pollutants and other harmful particles. As a result, a city is covered with a layer of dirty particles, which include a lot of carbon and smoke.
Experts stated that the impacts of burning coal, waste, oil, tires, crop residue, industries, and other sources of smoke into the atmosphere start to show in the early winter and last until the end of the season.
