TCL Introduces Phones With Screens That Feel Like Paper for Eye Comfort

TCL unveiled its cutting-edge NxtPaper display technology a few years ago with the goal of improving eye comfort and reducing glare. It’s interesting that it also guarantees vibrant colour reproduction while being resistant to fingerprints.

Version 2.0 of this technology was unveiled by the company this year, but it is currently only available in a small number of products, specifically three tablets and one convertible laptop. With the release of the new TCL 40 NxtPaper and TCL 40 NxtPaper 5G smartphones, it is at last available on smartphones.

The 6.78″ LCD screen on the TCL 40 NxtPaper has a high refresh rate of 90Hz and a 20.5:9 aspect ratio with Full HD+ resolution. Notably, it includes a special e-reader mode that skillfully converts the UI to grayscale and offers a more comfortable reading experience for the eyes.

An optional case with a T-Pen stylus makes it possible for this device to also function as a notepad, which is an intriguing feature. The NxtPaper technology consists of a number of layers, one of which impressively simulates the feel of using a real pen and paper while using a stylus.

The phone is powered by the Helio G88 chipset, which is also paired with a sizable 8 GB of RAM (which can be expanded by up to 8 GB of virtual RAM) and 256 GB of storage. A microSD slot is conveniently available for those in need of more storage, and it is part of a triple card slot that also has room for two SIM cards and the microSD card.

The arrangement, which incorporates a triple camera system, includes a 50MP primary module with a 1/2.76″ sensor and 0.64 m pixels, a 5MP ultra-wide lens with a wide 115° field of view, and a 2MP macro module to complete the setup.

A 32MP front-facing camera (with a 1/3.45″ sensor size and 0.65 m pixels) allows for video calls and the capture of selfies. The main front and rear cameras can capture 1080p videos at 30 frames per second.

This device’s large 5,010 mAh battery can be charged at 33W fast charging speeds using the USB-PD 3.0 protocol. While a full battery recharge takes roughly 100 minutes, reaching 50% charge can be done in just about 30 minutes. Both the USB-C 2.0 cable and the 33W charger are included in the retail package.

The TCL 40 NxtPaper will be available in Europe for $215 as of launch.
