Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, the acting prime minister, said on Thursday that the government would soon announce relief for electricity users.
Speaking to senior journalists in Islamabad, the premier claimed that contracts with independent power producers (IPPs) and transmission and distribution (T&T) losses are primarily to blame for the high price of electricity.
The prime minister stated that the government is negotiating with relevant multilateral financial institutions about potential relief for electricity consumers without specifically mentioning the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The government will soon announce relief measures, according to the prime minister, without breaking any international agreements.
It is important to note that nationwide protests over exorbitant electricity prices erupted last week. The premier convened an urgent meeting to discuss potential relief strategies after the protests. At the time, no announcements regarding immediate relief measures were made.
The premier said today that the situation is not a matter of law and order and downplayed the protests. He attributed the protests’ instigation to political parties.
