The Supreme Court of Pakistan has granted the former leader of Pakistan’s bail request, a day after another court declared that the prosecution of the former prime minister Imran Khan on charges of disclosing state secrets was illegal.

The former cricket star is fighting a variety of legal challenges in an attempt to get out of jail and lead his party in the general election campaign on February 8, which his most formidable opponent, another former prime minister, is betting on winning.

On August 5, the 71-year-old received a three-year jail term for selling gifts obtained unlawfully from the state while he was prime minister from 2018 to 2022. His lawyer claims that the Supreme Court granted the bail request.

Naeem Panjutha, Khan’s lawyer, said on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, “A decision will come in the next hearing after arguments from both sides.”

He stated that no hearing date has been scheduled, but the Supreme Court will confer with the administration regarding the matter.

Khan was ousted from office in 2022 as a result of a parliamentary vote of no confidence.
