The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has negated former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani’s petition based on which he had challenged the Senate chairman election, clarifying that courts do not interfere in the happenings of the Parliament.
The former prime minister — who was the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) common contender standing against the government nominee Sadiq Sanjrani — had been defeated in the Senate chairman election by gaining 42 votes in comparison to Sanjrani’s 48.

The PPP had declared it would defy the decision after the governing officer — when the ballots were being calculated — stated that seven votes had been overruled.
Based on the judgment, it has been simplified that the court does not mingle with the workings of the Parliament.
The court also conveyed the hope that political parties and representatives will take decision regarding their issues with each other without including the bench.
PPP’s Farooq H Naek had issued the petition on Gillani’s behalf at the high court a few days ago.
In the petition, Gillani had specified that seven ballots that were in his favor were overruled by the RO when the senate elections were being conducted.
